2015 Winners of the Undergraduate Paper Prize

We are very pleased to announce the winners of the 2015 Children's Literature Paper Prize competition, in recognition of the best undergraduate essay written for a children’s literature class at Pitt. This year:

Alexandra Cathcart is the winner for her paper, "A Racialized Menagerie: Unpacking Race in Marc Brown’s Arthur Series," written for Critical Approaches to Children's Literature taught by Courtney Weikle-Mills. Alexandra's paper also received national recognition from the Children's Literature Association as the 2015 winner of the Carol Gay Award for outstanding papers on children's literature by undergraduate students.

Julianne Griffith is the first runner-up for her paper, "Childism in Thompson’s Eloise and Bemelmans’ Madeleine," written for Critical Approaches to Children's Literature taught by Courtney Weikle-Mills.

Claire Werkiser is the second runner-up for her paper, "Visible Invisibility: Socialization, Bodily Inscription, and Ideology at Work in The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing," written for Critical Approaches to Children's Literature taught by Anna Redcay. Claire's essay was also the runner-up for the 2015 Carol Gay Award from the Children's Literature Assocation.
