Julian Gill-Peterson, Histories of the Transgender Child Book Launch

October 23, 2018 - 4:00pm to 5:30pm

On October 23 at 4:00 p.m., GSWS and the Children's Literature Program are hosting a book launch for Julian Gill-Peterson's Histories of the Transgender Child. The book argues that contrary to the current consensus in the media and medical establishment, transgender children have a long history that stretches across the entire twentieth century. Using archival research at hospitals and clinics, scientific and medical literature, and a sustained theoretical engagement at the intersection of transgender studies and childhood studies, Dr. Gill-Peterson demonstrates that transgender children were part of key developments in modern medicine and the life sciences. The history of the transgender child undermines the very core of how we understand the human body to grow into and out of sex, gender, and race.

Visiting Fellow Mary Zaborskis and GSWS Lecturer Julie Beaulieu will offer responses to the book, followed by commentary by Dr. Gill-Peterson. We'll end with Q&A and a reception. Come celebrate with us!
