Enrolling in the Children's Literature Program

Undergraduates

Undergraduates wishing to learn more about the Certificate in Children’s Literature should review the program requirements outlined on the Undergraduate page.

To enroll in the Program, you should first seek the advice of your academic advisor. Once you are sure that you want to earn the Certificate, you can officially sign up for it at the Advising Center in 201 Thackeray Hall. After that, your transcript will indicate that you are earning the Certificate, and when you graduate, you will automatically receive your Certificate in the mail (assuming that you have fulfilled all the requirements).

If you have specific questions about your course of study, you may contact the Director of the Children’s Literature Program, Dr. Marah Gubar. Dr. Gubar always recommends that, if possible,

    • Students take the “core” courses in the right order: “Children and Culture” first; then “Childhood’s Books” OR “Representing Adolescence”; and finally “Critical Approaches to Children’s Literature”
    • Students take these “core” classes as soon as they can, because they are popular and fill up quickly. Plus, you don’t want to get to your last semester and suddenly realize that “Critical Approaches” conflicts with another class you have to take, since you absolutely must take that class to get the certificate!

    Graduate Students

Prospective graduate students interested in studying children’s literature can learn more about the options open to them by reviewing our informational page on Graduate Student Research and taking a look at some sample syllabi of graduate seminars offered by our faculty.

Please Note: There is not a separate graduate degree in Children's Literature at Pitt; those who wish to specialize in this field will apply either to our MA program in English or our PhD program in Critical and Cultural Studies.
